Melaleuca alternifolia
Tea tree was named by Captain Cook's crew, who brewed the small, dark leaves and drank it as a tea substitute. It’s astounding healing properties were used by the Aborigines. During World War II medics recognised its powerful germicidal and antiseptic effects.
Source: Melaleuca alternifolia is native to Australia and all the oil is produced there.
Extraction: Tea Tree essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of the shrub.
Aroma: Tea Tree essential oil has as spicy, hot, nutmeg-like, medicinal smell.
Fragrance note: Middle.
Properties: Tea Tree Essential Oil is a powerful, non-irritating antiseptic that kills bacteria. It is 12 times as effective as carbolic acid. When vaporised, it can help relieve congestion. It is mainly used to treat skin complaints.
Uses: Massage, baths, inhalation, vaporisation, poultice and may be added to a base emollient. Diluted one part essential oil to nine parts carrier oil, it makes an instant home first-aid kit.
Apply to cuts, burns, spots, stings, blisters, dandruff and nappy rash.
Blends well with: Basil, Bergamot, Black Pepper, Chamomile German, Clary Sage, Clove, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Nutmeg, Oakmoss, Oregano, Peppermint, Pine, Ravensara, Rosemary, Thyme and Ylang Ylang.
Caution: Tea Tree Essential Oil is perfectly safe for home use as long as it is diluted properly before application.
